Tyson Recalls Chicken Nuggets That Might Have Plastic Inside

The recall affects the company's panko chicken nuggets

Tyson is recalling about 130,000 pounds of fully cooked chicken nugget products that might be contaminated with hard plastic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Tuesday.

The company was made aware of the problem after customers reported “foreign material contamination” of their chicken nuggets. The chicken nugget products in question were produced on July 18. The recall affects 5-pound bags of “Tyson FULLY COOKED PANKO CHICKEN NUGGETS” sold at Costco locations across the country and 20-pound bulk packages of “SPARE TIME Fully Cooked, Panko Chicken Nuggets, Nugget Shaped Chicken Breast Pattie Fritters With Rib Meat” sold to a Pennsylvania wholesaler.

“According to Tyson Foods, the plastic material ranged in size from 21mm in length and 6.5mm in diameter and may have come from a round, hard plastic rod used to connect a plastic transfer belt,” the Department of Agriculture said in a release. “The firm said the products pass through a metal detector, but the plastic is not detectable to this technology.”

The department said there have been no reported health problems caused by the plastic, but it urged consumers not to eat the affected chicken nuggets.
