TSX rises 0.38 percent

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX rose 54.24 points, or 0.38 percent, to 14,416.89.

Leading the index were Aphria Inc , up 7.8 percent, Alamos Gold Inc , up 7.7 percent, and Martinrea International Inc , higher by 7 percent.

Lagging shares were Baytex Energy Corp , down 9.1 percent, Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd, down 7.1 percent, and Whitecap Resources Inc, lower by 6.8 percent.

On the TSX 150 issues rose and 92 fell as a 1.6-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 4 new highs and 41 new lows, with total volume of 383.1 million shares.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Bombardier Inc , Aphria Inc and Baytex Energy Corp.

The TSX's energy group fell 1.55 points, or 1.12 percent, while the financials sector climbed 0.64 points, or 0.23 percent.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 7.34 percent, or $3.66, to $46.22 a barrel. Brent crude fell 5.6 percent, or $3.34, to $56.27 [O/R]

The TSX is off 11.1 percent for the year.
