Tottenham player ratings vs Burnley: Defence on top as Sanchez and Royal impress, but Bergwijn poor

Tottenham progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-final after a 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor

Lucas Moura’s goal was the difference in a low quality affair, in which neither side managed a shot on target in the first-half.

The Brazilian headed home during a spell of Spurs’ pressure and the visitors withstood a late Burnley rally to reach the last eight.

Dan Kilpatrick was at Turf Moor to rate the Spurs players...

Pierluigi Gollini - 6

Barely tested all night as Burnley mustered just one shot on target.

Emerson Royal - 7

Got his delivery right with an assist for Lucas after overhitting a couple of earlier crosses, and was solid defensively.]

Cristian Romero - 7

Appeared to enjoy the physical battle and flew into tackles and blocks. The best passing centre-half at Nuno’s disposal, too.

Davinson Sanchez - 8

In the right place to make a crucial intervention as Burnley rallied late, while he used his pace to mop up balls behind. A decent showing.

Ben Davies - 6

Distribution was mixed and offered little in the way of attacking thrust down the left flank. But solid enough on the night.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 6

Passing was limited but did his job in screening the back four.

Oliver Skipp - 7

There are questions about the effectiveness of the Hojbjerg-Skipp pivot and Spurs dramatically improved after he was replaced. Nonetheless, he actually played quite well, keeping Spurs ticking over.

Steven Bergwijn - 4

Decision making was abject and he made no impact before being replaced. Wasn’t helped by having to challenge for a succession of long balls.

Giovani Lo Celso - 6

When he was given space to get his head up, he made a difference, including in the build-up to the goal. But too often slow to release the ball.

Bryan Gil - 5

Forced off early through injury. A shame for the young Spaniard, who has been one of the few fringe players who has looked capable of forcing his way into the first XI recently.

Harry Kane - 6

Shanked two decent openings on his left foot in the first-half as he poor form continued.

Subs

Lucas Moura (Gil, 25’) - 7

Took his goal well. Acted playmaker in an inside right role but misplaced key passes, including a golden opportunity to play in Kane.

Tanguy Ndombele (Skipp, 66’) - 5

Unable to make a significant impact with the ball and perhaps not the player Spurs wanted on the pitch for Burnley’s late spell of pressure.

Heung-min Son (Bergwijn, 66’) - 5

Gave the Clarets defence something different to think about but unable make a major impact on the game.

Joe Rodon (Lo Celso, 88’) - N/A

Helped Spurs see out the game.

Not used: Austin, Dier, Doherty, Reguilon, Tanganga.
