The Top Secret 'WandaVision' Cameo Was In Front of Our Eyes the Whole Time

From Esquire

Part of the fun of the fun of any Marvel Cinematic Universe offering is speculating about the surprises that are to come –because we always know there are going to be at least a few. With WandaVision being both the first Marvel Studios week-to-week TV series, and it being so directly tied in with the movies, and, well, everyone being stuck inside due to cold weather and a global pandemic, the speculation has been especially ramped up. So when both WandaVision leads Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen hinted at a massive cameo to come, audiences put their tin foil hats on, and got excited for cameos that may or may not have been coming.

The first hint of a massive cameo came when an interview with Olsen went viral, with some headlines claiming "WandaVision star says to expect a huge Marvel cameo on the level of Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian"

But if you actually look at what Olsen said in the interview, this is misleading at best and inaccurate at worst. The actual Olsen interview was with TVLine, and the writer of the piece herself did mention the Mandalorian Skywalker cameo. But those were never Olsen's words. As the TVLine piece actually wrote:

When asked if WandaVision has anything similar in store—namely a casting that she can’t believe hasn’t leaked yet—Olsen gave us a quick, “Yes.” And though she dared not offer any specifics, she did share with a laugh that “I’m really excited” for viewers to see what (or who) is coming.

For people to take what they did out of that was simply a case of wishful thinking and internet avalanching.

Feeding more into the hype, however, Bettany hinted at a major cameo to come in WandaVision. "The truth is, of all the characters that we were trying to keep secret, a lot of them got out through leaks," he says in the video. "There is one character that has not been revealed, and it is very exciting. It's an actor that I've longed to work with all of my life, and we have some amazing scenes together, and the chemistry between us is, I think, extraordinary. There were just fireworks on the set. So, I'm really excited for people to see that star."

This got the internet especially fired up. It has to be Ian McKellen as Magneto! Maybe Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier. Could we dare think of Al Pacino as Mephisto? Hell, Michael Fassbender's Magneto might not even be big enough!

Well, stay tuned, folks.

The big WandaVision cameo was...Paul Bettany.

Yup. No Magneto, no Mephisto, not even a little Doctor Strange. The big cameo in WandaVision was Paul Bettany, who finally got the chance to act opposite...himself. In the Episode 8 credits scene, it was revealed that a White Vision had been created. In Episode 9, "The Series Finale," we saw scenes shared between this new White Vision and our old friend, Red Vision. "They were guessing people like Benedict Cumberbatch or Patrick Stewart, I was thinking, 'God, that's a good idea," he told GMA. "They're gonna be so disappointed when they find out it's me."

While it might be frustrating at first, re-watching the video interview clip and knowing that Bettany was joking about acting alongside himself and utterly mystifying and disregarding everything about over-the-top fan theory culture is both hilarious and endearing. Honestly, if we're going to get more jokes of that level we'd accept red herrings that lead to not only White Vision, but Blue Vision, Green Vision, and hell, even Purple Vision. More jokes, more misleading fan theories, and more focus on enjoying the shows and movies for what they are, rather than encouraging the fan base to project what they want or what they think they want onto something.
