After today, Wichita will be down to just one location of this longtime sub shop

After today, Wichita will be down to one Planet Sub sandwich shop.

Doug Brantner, who opened the Delano location of the Kansas-City based sandwich shop at 535 W. Douglas in 2016, confirmed that today — Friday, Dec. 3 — will be its last day in business.

Brantner, who also owned the Planet Sub at Central and Maize, said he sold it six months ago to one of his managers and now plans to retire. He decided to just close the Delano restaurant, whose lease was expiring, he said.

The shop had been doing fairly well, he said, and if he weren’t retiring, he would have tried to keep it going.

“The pandemic and what-not did not help things, but it was slowly coming back,” he said.

Brantner closed the Planet Sub that once operated at 3526 N. Rock Road in 2017, and Emperor’s Grill moved in. (That restaurant has since relocated, and the space is vacant.) He opened the Planet Sub at 10330 W. Central in 2015.

Wichita also once had a Planet Sub, owned by another operator, at 11333 E. Kellogg.
