Facebook, Inc. shares closed down a modest 0.18% yesterday but also hit a brand new high of $186.21 during intra-day trading. TechCrunch reported this week that there is a test running now that lets a small number of users post their Instagram Stories directly to WhatsApp, as a WhatsApp status. A company spokesperson said, "We are always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you." Cowen analyst John Blackledge also has said that Facebook's Instagram is expected to be the biggest share gainer among any social network when it comes to advertisements. The cross-testing first became known from a reader in Brazil.

Snap Inc. was a big decliner in Thursday trading, closing the day down 4.7%. The company was downgraded by Cowen this week from "market perform" to "underperform" and lowered their price target from $12 to $11. According to analyst John Blackledge at the firm, Snap managed to increase user engagement throughout 2017. A survey by the firm of 2,500 consumers found the average time spent on the platform rose from 33 minutes per day in the first quarter of 2017 to around 38 minutes per day by the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, a survey with 50 senior U.S. advertiser buyers painted a different picture, however 96% of ad buyers in the survey had said they prefer to advertise instead on Instagram's Stories platform. 48% of ad buyers who had placed an advertisement on Instagram Stories last year will do the same in 2018.
