I-TIP: While you're basking on a beach is your home covered?

I-TIP: While you're basking on a beach is your home covered?

This winter many Canadians will fly south to escape cold temperatures and harsh snowy conditions. But while we're on warm beaches our houses are still back here in the cold and that's why you should always check your house insurance policy before jetting off.

Many policies require you have someone check in on your home while you're away to minimize damage if there's a power outage, heating system failure, pipe or sewer problem.

Some policies require you to make sure someone walks through every level of your home on a daily basis in order to maintain valid coverage.

The Canadian Association of Home & Property Inspectors suggests if you're going away for an extended period you should:

- Adjust your thermostat to keep your home temp steady above 15C and open interior doors to allow heat to circulate and prevent pipes from freezing

- Turn off the main water water valve

- Consult a plumber about adding antifreeze to home plumbing system

- Turn down your water heater to conserve energy

To minimize your chances of a break-in put your lights on timers, cancel newspaper delivery and arrange for someone to pick up your mail and deliveries.

You can also save on electricity by unplugging electronics. Many draw electricity even when powered off.

Follow these steps and you should be able to leave your worries and the cold behind.
