Thrill Your Halloween Guests with This Smoky Witches’ Cauldron Punch

Thrill Your Halloween Guests with This Smoky Witches’ Cauldron Punch

Double, double toil and trouble, do we have a recipe for you.

The star of YouTube’s My Cupcake Addiction, Elise Strachan, stopped by the PEOPLE offices for a Facebook Live video and shared a punch recipe that’s sure to boil over well with your Halloween guests.

The author of the new book Sweet! Celebrations uses lime Jell-O, water and pineapple juice to make a sweet and tangy base for her punch. Then comes the fun. With a little help from lemon-lime soda and vanilla ice cream the blogger turns the batch drink into a beautiful, bubbly mess.

But the real showstopper comes from the dry ice. Strachan lines a large cauldron with dry ice (to be handled with gloves) before placing in her bowl of punch. After drizzling the ice with warm water, the whole cauldron is taken over with a smoky effect that’s straight out of Hocus Pocus.

To serve, Strachan shows viewers how to make mummy glasses out of spray painted mason jars and medical gauze. For the full instructions, watch the video above or follow the full recipe below.

Witches’ Cauldron Punch

Makes: 3 quarts

1 box (3 ounces) lime Jell-O
1 cup boiling water
4 cups cold water
4 cups pineapple juice, chilled
Large watertight cauldron (see Note)
Dry ice (available at ice supply stores)
1 pint vanilla ice cream
Green food coloring
1 liter lemon-lime soda

1. In a heatproof bowl, dissolve the Jell-O in the boiling water and stir until there are no crystals. Add the cold water to cool the mixture. Add the pineapple juice and refrigerate until ready to serve.

2. Just before serving, place a large punch bowl (at least 4-quart capacity) into the empty cauldron.

3. Place chunks of dry ice in the base of the cauldron, not in the punch bowl. Handle with gloves, as dry ice will burn the skin. Dry ice should not be consumed.

4. Pour the refrigerated mixture into the punch bowl, and place 6 large scoops of vanilla ice cream on top. Add a few drops of food coloring to the bottle of soda, then pour into the punch bowl a little at a time until the bowl reaches capacity.

5. Finally, add hot water to the base of the cauldron (in between the punch bowl and cauldron) and watch it smoke, boil, and bubble.

NOTE: You need a cauldron large enough for the punch bowl to fit inside, and the rim of the punch bowl should line up with the rim of the cauldron. If necessary, use a smaller upturned bowl to prop it up.
