Pixar's "Inside Out" continues a tradition at the box office

Pixar’s new animated film, “Inside Out,” brought in an estimated $91.1 million in North American ticket sales over its opening weekend. It is the second biggest opening ever for a Pixar film. It’s also the biggest domestic debut ever for an original film that is not either a sequel or based on other sourced material.

"Inside Out" finished second to the Universal Pictures blockbuster sequel "Jurassic World," which brought in $102 million in its second weekend.

Disney's Pixar is used to making a splash at the box office, according to Rentrak (RENT). Here are the other top performing Pixar films in their opening weekend:

Toy Story 3

The only Pixar film to outperform "Inside Out" was the 2010 box office blowout, “Toy Story 3,” which raked in $110.3 million over its North American opening weekend. And it was a big hit worldwide as that summer went on. North American sales totaled $415 million and global sales hit $1 billion. "Toy Story 3" was nominated for five Academy Awards and won in two categories: Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song.

Monsters University

“Monsters University” was a big hit for Pixar in the summer of 2013. Over its opening weekend, the sequel to the 2002 film “Monsters, Inc.” brought in $82.4 million in North American sales. The movie raked in more than $745 million globally. But while it didn’t disappoint at the box office, critics weren’t heaping the praise and nominations that Pixar had grown accustomed to. Monsters University did not get a nomination for Best Animated film at the Academy Awards, a rare miss for Pixar.

The Incredibles

"The Incredibles" wasn’t a summer movie but it had one of the best opening weekends for a Disney Pixar film. Released in November of 2004, it raked in more than $70.4 million domestically for its opening weekend. Total sales exceeded $261 million and worldwide sales hit nearly $633 million.

Finding Nemo

Opening weekend for the 2003 hit “Finding Nemo” netted more than $70.2 million. The Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks-voiced flick raked in almost $765 million worldwide. North American sales reached $339.7 million. A long-awaited sequel pegged to Nemo's quirky best friend, "Finding Dory", is in the works for a release next summer.

Up

When “Up” opened in May of 2009, it raked in $68.1 million in North American sales its first weekend. It’s the story of a retired balloon salesman and widower who ties thousands of balloons to his home and flies away with his house to avoid being sent to a nursing home. The movie went on to bring in more than $731 million globally and $293 million in North America.
