The Canadian stocks with the best three-year returns

Canada's stock market is dominated by the financial and energy sectors, but that doesn't mean they provide the highest returns.

The Toronto Stock Exchange released a list of the 30 top-performing stocks over the past three years, including dividends. Fourteen of the 30 are from the mining industry and five hail from the technology sector. The rest are from a diverse group of industries.

The top 30, which have been dubbed the TSX30, have created $248 billion in market capitalization growth over the past three years and average adjusted returns of more than 300 per cent.

1. Aura Minerals ORA.TO +1,125 per cent

A commodities boom helped the Latin America-focused gold and base metal miner's share price rocket.

2. Shopify SHOP.TO +846 per cent

Canada's largest company by market capitalization not only survived the pandemic but thrived as people shopped from home.

3. Trisura Group TSU.TO +523 per cent

The specialty insurance company is experiencing rapid growth and has operations in Canada, the U.S. and globally.

4. Ballard Power Systems BLDP.TO +495 per cent

The provider of hydrogen technology for automakers continued to build on gains after being a TSX top performer in 2019

5. Capstone Mining CS.TO +433 per cent

It scours the Americas for copper, molybdenum, silver, zinc, lead, iron, and gold deposits.

6. Champion Iron CIA.TO +365 per cent

The company searches for iron ore in Canada and sells it domestically as well as to China, Japan, and other global markets.

7. goeasy GSY.TO +327 per cent

Loans through easyfinancial and household products leased through easyhome helped make this a stock market darling.

8. Orla Mining OLA.TO +313 per cent

The company explores for gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper deposits, with mines in Mexico and Panama.

9. SilverCrest Metals SIL.TO +286 per cent

The miner is focused on Mexico and primarily explores for silver and gold properties.

10. Wesdome Gold Mines WDO.TO +283 per cent

Wesdome looks for gold in Canada and sells it in the form of bars.
