'The Founder' Trailer: Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc Plots to Turn McDonald's Into 'The New American Church'

It’s almost impossible today to find anyone who wouldn’t instantly recognize McDonald’s golden arches — but how many of us know its more humble (and contentious) origins? The Founder presents the story of Ray Kroc, the man who made the fast-food chain what it is today. Ahead of the movie’s awards-qualifying limited release tomorrow, we now have its second trailer (watch it above).

Directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, Saving Mr. Banks), The Founder introduces us to Kroc (Michael Keaton), a traveling milkshake-maker salesman who stumbles upon a popular local California burger joint run by the McDonald brothers (John Carroll Lynch and Nick Offerman). Kroc is impressed by the operation, and before long the trio is getting into business together, driven by Kroc’s belief that franchising will launch the restaurant to greater heights. He’s right, of course, but this isn’t exactly a feel-good story; instead, it becomes a tale about Kroc’s predatory desire to seize control of McDonald’s and transform it into “the new American church” — with or without the brothers who started it in the first place and gave it its name.

As Keaton says in the trailer, his Kroc is a man of dogged “persistence” who just wants to win, and if distributor the Weinstein Company has its way, The Founder will be contending for awards by the time it’s served up to a national audience on Jan. 20, 2017.
