The Deal Seeker Shops for Grads: Our Exclusive Deals

My 16-year-old daughter is about to complete another year of school. She has endured the morning commute, mastered the protective coloration required to survive high school, negotiated geometry, and discovered physics. I feel the need to buy her a reward, and I’ll bet I’m not the only parent wondering what an about-to-be grad would like.

So I studied my own focus group of one (the daughter) and found a few constants: the backpack, the cellphone, and the headphones. With that data in mind, I hunted up some deals the kids will dig. Check these out, and take note that some of these deals are exclusive for Yahoo Tech readers.

LG Nexus 5 Android phone

image

This is a great Android phone, even though it’s not that new. It’s loaded with all that cutting-edgeness (inductive charging, NFC, you name it), and it is the only phone my daughter will touch. TextNow Wireless is offering Deal Seekers 20 percent off the cost of the phone. (That’s $50 just for reading. You’re welcome.) Use this link. This puts that Nexus 5 at an affordable $199.99; usually it retails for $249.99 at TextNow. It is refurbished, but it comes with a one-year warranty. And TextNow has bargain unlimited plans too. The all-you-can-eat data plans start at $19 a month. They will drop you to a slow connection after you’ve used up your allotment, but it won’t run out. Perfect for a teen who spends a lot of time on Wi-Fi.

OGIO bags

image

My daughter has been flinging her dodgy backpack around for a year. Judging from its aroma, there are a few baloney sandwiches smearing its interior. Fortunately, OGIO is offering Deal Seekers a 30 percent discount on lifestyle bags. (That’s women’s bags and backpacks.) Go have fun shopping, find something your graduate will like, and use the code “yahoo” when you check out to watch the price drop.

Headphones

Headphones, in particular, seem to be the brain-armor of the modern teen — ready to protect against parents, bullies, dull adults, and boredom. You can never really have enough of that — especially if they look good, right? Here is a handful of great deals in this department.

Urbanears

Urbanears is having a huge midseason sale on some colors — mulberry, rowan, and moss — of its wonderfully tinted over-ear and in-ear headsets. (Just look at the colors above. I could tell you that’s berry, orange, and green, but the crazy color names work better.) This is a 40 percent price drop on several styles, bringing some models down to as low as $21. And these are not crappy, drugstore ear buds, either. I love mine. Or I did until my daughter stole them. And then lost them.

Marshall headphones

Marshall is the iconic brand that blew your ears out when you stood in front of their amps at rock concerts. Now your kids can blow their ears out on rock ’n’ roll right from the back seat for 50 percent off list price.

Beats by Dr. Dre and Monster at Walmart

If a trip to Walmart (or Walmart.com) is in your future, check out these bargains on two popular-with-teens headsets: Beats by Dr. Dre Drenched Solo On-Ear Headphones in black are on sale, online only, for $129.99 (they are $169.95 in Walmart stores), and Monster Inspiration Noise-Isolating Over-Ear Headphones, Black are $79.99 (originally $199.99), available only on Walmart.com.

Sonos PLAY:1 speakers

image

If you are brave enough to encourage your teen to take her headphones off and listen to music on real speakers, Sonos gives you the ability to turn down the volume through a smartphone app when the kid isn’t listening to you. You can get started on this wireless speaker system for $50 off at the moment. A Sonos package of two PLAY:1 speakers is $349 anywhere that sells Sonos systems, including Sonos.com. It’s a decent deal on a flexible package: You can set up the speakers as a stereo pair or put them in separate rooms as independent mono speakers.
