Tesla competitors air electric vehicle ads during Elon Musk 'Saturday Night Live'

·2 min read

Live from New York, it's Tesla's competitors trying to steal the show from Elon Musk.

Four automakers aired electric vehicle commercials during the "Saturday Night Live" episode hosted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Lucid Motors, Ford, Volkswagen and Volvo showcased electric vehicles in advertisements in a bid to grab a portion of the spotlight on a night featuring the billionaire widely credited with leading an EV revolution.

Lucid, a startup that hasn't yet sold any vehicles, advertised the Lucid Air, an ultra-luxury vehicle that will have battery range of more than 500 miles.

At least three automakers aired electric vehicle commercials in the first half-hour of the "Saturday Night Live" episode hosted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on May 8, 2021.

Ford showed the Mustang Mach-E, an electric crossover version of its famed pony car. Volkswagen showed off the VW ID.4, its first electric SUV. And Volvo showed off the XC-90 plug-in hybrid SUV.

If Tesla advertises anything, that would be a first. Musk has repeatedly declined to air Tesla ads, saying it's not necessary because demand for Tesla's products is always robust.

If Musk knew about the EV ads, he gave no indication during the first half of the broadcast.

But he did make reference to at least one competitor.

"I could say something truly shocking, like I drive a Prius," Musk joked during his monologue in a reference to the Toyota hybrid sedan.
