TCU football QB Max Duggan undergoes successful foot surgery

TCU quarterback Max Duggan underwent successful foot surgery today in Dallas, a source close to Duggan told the Star-Telegram.

Duggan is expected to need three to four months to recover. That recovery timeline would put him in line to return for the start of spring practices in early March under new coach Sonny Dykes. Duggan has no plans to transfer despite the coaching change from Gary Patterson to Dykes.

Duggan had a bone removed from the fifth metatarsal region of his foot and a torn tendon reattached. Dr. Keith Heier performed the surgery. The tendon was torn significantly more than doctors had expected, the source said.

“They were really surprised he was able to play through it,” the source said.

Duggan injured his foot during the Texas Tech game on Oct. 9, but he managed to continue playing. He finished the season with 2,048 yards passing with a career-best 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 352 yards and three TDs.

Duggan was available but didn’t play in games against Baylor and Oklahoma State on Nov. 6 and Nov. 13. But he returned for the final two games as the last QB standing.

TCU interim coach Jerry Kill called Duggan one of the toughest players, and people, he’s met in his life. Patterson echoed those thoughts on Twitter.

“I better not hear anything bad about Max Duggan!” Patterson wrote. “He didn’t have surgery to help TCU win when others turned it down!”

For his career, Duggan has thrown for 5,920 yards and 41 touchdowns. Those numbers rank fifth in program history in both categories. He’s also rushed for 1,433 yards and 19 TDs.

Duggan will be entering his senior season in 2022, although he could have two years of eligibility left with the NCAA freezing eligibility in 2020 during the pandemic.
