Taylor Swift Thanked Boyfriend Joe Alwyn During Her BRIT Awards Acceptance Speech

Taylor Swift Thanked Boyfriend Joe Alwyn During Her BRIT Awards Acceptance Speech

Taylor Swift made history today at the BRIT Awards as the first-ever female (and first non-Brit) to take home the trophy for Global Icon. She joins some very good company as the fourth name to earn the honor alongside David Bowie, Robbie Williams, and Sir Elton John. During her speech, she gave a sweet shoutout to her boyfriend Joe Alwyn. After years of keeping her relationship under the radar, Swift has been more open about Alwyn, bringing her beau to shows like the Grammys and the Golden Globes and holding hands while they're out and about.

According to Entertainment Tonight, the BRITs enlisted a few of Swift's famous pals to introduce her, including Selena Gomez.

"Taylor is the same girl that I met when I was 15," Gomez said in a pre-recorded intro video. "She cares so deeply for her fans ... I wish I could be there and just support you and hang out with you. You deserve it and you're amazing."

During her time at the podium, Swift thanked her collaborators, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, before mentioning Alwyn.

"Thank you Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, Joe," she said before she also thanked the NHS, her British fans, and her friends and family. She also took the time to offer words of inspiration, encouraging her fans to do new things, even if they're "met with resistance" or "turbulence" and "pressure."

"If there's one thing I've learned, you have to look around you every day and take note of the people who have always believed in you," she added. "There is no career path that comes free of negativity. If you're met with resistance, that probably means that you're doing something new. If you're experiencing turbulence or pressure, that probably means you're rising."

She finished by saying that the most important thing was for everyone to follow their passions and not be discouraged by critics. It felt like a moment of self-reflection, as well, especially when Swift mentioned that she was working to prove her critics wrong.

"And there might be times when you put your whole heart and soul into and it is met with cynicism or skepticism," she finished. "You cannot let that crush you. You have to let it fuel you because we live in a world where anyone has the right to say anything about you at any time, but just please remember that you have the right to prove them wrong."
