Taco Bell Cantina to open soon in Westport with a full bar, Kansas City sports theme

Months after it applied for a liquor license and weeks after the logo appeared on the building, officials are confirming they will open the region’s first Taco Bell Cantina in Westport, complete with cocktails and a Kansas City sports theme.

California-based franchise Diversified Restaurant Group hopes to open the restaurant in late December or in early January in the Westley on Broadway building.

It will have the Taco Bell menu, full bar, several TVs, a DJ, VIP rooms, and indoor and outdoor bars focusing on local craft beers and wine, along with the Twisted Freeze — customized with vodka, tequila or rum.

The new Taco Bell Cantina in Westport will be the first for the region.

The franchise liked the built-in customer base in the apartment building at 4111 Broadway, the visibility of the location at the high traffic intersection of Broadway and Westport Road, and the walkability of the area.

“With the vibrancy that Westport has, it was the perfect place to open this cantina,” said SG Ellison, president of Diversified Restaurant Group.

The decor will focus on Kansas City sports teams including the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals, and local artists are doing the murals.

Diversified Restaurant Group owns and operates nearly 300 Taco Bells in the Kansas City region and elsewhere, along with five Taco Bell Cantinas.

The company said Taco Bell has about 60 Taco Bell Cantinas nationwide, mostly in urban areas.

A Taco Bell spokeswoman previously said: “Taco Bell is looking long-term as it reinvents what it means to be a restaurant of the future. While other brands may be solely focused on drive-thrus, Taco Bell is planning for a future filled with, of course, drive-thrus, but also everything from experiential to digital-forward elements.”
