How AT&T Customers Can Make Wi-Fi Calls for Free

AT&T customers who own certain iPhone models now have access to Wi-Fi calling, the telecommunications giant announced Thursday.

This feature gives cellphone users the option to make and receive calls via a wireless Internet connection rather than via the traditional cell connection. To do so, callers must be in range of a wireless network.

The new option is handy for making calls in areas where a traditional signal is tough to get, such as homes or offices with dense building construction, for example.

There is no additional charge on Wi-Fi calls made from the U.S. and to U.S. phone numbers. To take advantage of the feature, though, AT&T customers need:

  • A compatible iPhone with the operating system known as iOS 9 installed.

  • A postpaid wireless account set up for HD voice.

  • A Wi-Fi Internet connection, such as at home or the office.

The compatible iPhone models are:

  • iPhone 6s

  • iPhone 6s Plus

  • iPhone 6

  • iPhone 6 Plus

AT&T customers can also now send and receive texts via Wi-Fi, although the company notes that such messages are counted and charged under customers’ existing rate plans.
