“Survival bread” is the internet’s current food obsession

Many of us turn to Pinterest for delicious food recipes that go far beyond the scope of just sustenance. Yet, the latest viral recipe is surprisingly simple — it’s called “survival bread” and apparently, it’s a hit in Alaska.

On Pinterest’s Foodnited States list, which provides the food interests of each state based on the site’s data, survival bread was listed as Alaska’s main food interest. So what exactly is this not-very-enticing-sounding food?

Although The Great British Bake Off has taught us that making bread is really hard to do, the recipe for survival bread is actually quite easy, according to LEAFtv.

All it takes to make survival bread is flour, salt, and water — and baking the mixture at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Seriously, that’s it.

Obviously, those ingredients make for a pretty bland bread, but that’s not why the Pinterest users of Alaska are so into it.

Survival bread is so popular because it can last for up to a year or more when stored correctly.

It can be compared to a food that was provided to soldiers during wartime — hardtack in the Civil War — which was just a basic bread or cracker that lasted for a long time and provided energy.

Yes, this sounds super boring, but what survival bread lacks in taste, it more than makes up for in practicality. So, next time you need a long-lasting food source or are tight on cash, maybe give the simplicity of survival bread a chance. It’s certainly not the most delectable recipe we have seen on Pinterest, but it will get the job done when it comes to nourishment.
