Styling, Performance Livened Up in 2017 Subaru BRZ

This week, Subaru released refresh details for the 2017 BRZ compact sporty car that will begin reaching dealer showrooms in September. Changes to prime the car for a better driving experience on open road and track include subtle exterior modifications, standard LED headlight and taillight systems, interior updates, plus improvements in handling and a new optional Performance package for the Limited trim level available next winter.

Exterior refinements to the BRZ’s Premium and Limited trim levels include a refreshed front fascia with wider front bumper cover and new standard LED headlight and taillight systems. Fenders are slightly restyled to match body color with black inserts, and the available fog lights are now LED. In the rear, an aluminum spoiler has been added in matching body paint.

Cabin changes have been made to enhance performance needs, Subaru says. A 4.2-in. LCD multi-function display to the right of the tachometer is standard on both trim levels. Driver readout information includes performance data such as lateral G force, accelerator pedal position, braking force, steering angle, oil and water temperatures, battery voltage, and a stop-watch function for recording lap times.

In addition, engineers have tweaked the 2.0-liter Boxer engine to generate a peppier 205 horsepower (vs. 200 horses) and 156 lb.-ft. of torque (vs. 151 lb.-ft.) when partnered with a 6-speed manual transmission that accelerates faster with a shorter gear ratio, Subaru claims. An optional automatic transmission is available on the Limited with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Handling is upgraded with coil springs and dampers as well as a larger rear stabilizer bar. The stability control system has been adapted to improve handing with the Sport mode that turns off stability control now being labeled “Track” mode.

A new Performance package is available on the Limited trim level with manual transmission and includes upgraded Brembo brakes, Sachs shocks for cornering, and 10-spoke, 17-in. black aluminum-alloy wheels. Both Premium and Limited trims are available with Subaru’s Starlink multimedia system with 6.2-in. display, an 8-speaker audio system, full connectivity for communication and music streaming, as well as a rearview camera.
