Winners and losers

Stocks on the move lower today include Southwest Airlines after reporting an earnings and revenue miss, Sleep Number mattress maker Select Comfort following a revenue miss, and Intel. Stocks on the move higher today include General Motors after it handily beat profit expectations, Homemaker PulteGroup on an earnings boost after it sold more homes at higher prices, and Pandora. Shares of the streaming music site popped midday as the Wall Street Journal reported Liberty Media’s CEO floated a $15 a share buyout offer. Pandora’s board apparently rejected the bid, wanting more.

NFL players targeting companies in concussion lawsuits

NFL training camps are set to open next week, but one looming issue still remains. While the NFL’s concussion deal with the players’ association appears to be settled, former players are taking another route—suing companies doing business with the NFL. Yahoo Finance’s Dan Roberts joins us to discuss.

Looking ahead

  • Tomorrow we’ll get an important read on the manufacturing sector with PMI’s manufacturing flash index for July. The consensus estimate is 51.9, showing modest expansion in the sector.

  • Later in the day we’ll get the Baker Hughes weekly rig count figures. Last Friday, the US rig count ticked higher for the third straight week.

  • Finally, Trekkies rejoice. Star Trek Beyond, the latest installment in the Star Trek franchise, opens tomorrow. Directed by Fast and the Furious 6 director Justin Lin, the film sees the crew of the USS Enterprise stranded on an unexplored planet, facing off against a ruthless new enemy. This marks the 13th movie in the Star Trek franchise.
