Starbucks rolls out video drive-thrus across Canada


Ordering at a drive-thru can range from a comical experience to a downright infuriating one, but a major change coming to some Starbucks drive-thru locations is trying to change that.

Starbucks Canada is introducing two-way video screens to 63 of its 200 drive-thru locations, with more on the way. Starbucks says it’s the first time this technology has been used in Canadian drive-thrus, and calls it the latest step in their move towards “personalized customer experiences.”

If you think the tech looks familiar, it’s because it’s been around for a little over a year in the U.S. at certain locations. In late 2015, a video went viral of a Florida Starbucks that offered two-way video technology, showing a woman with hearing impairment using the system to sign her order to the barista.

“It is a big deal to [the] deaf community that Starbucks has one now,” Rebecca King, the woman who shot and appeared in the video, told local news outlet Action News Jax. “We all want to have that at every drive thru in the world.”
