Starbucks packages up a trendy beverage so customers can make their own

Source: Starbucks. Starbucks released Cold Brew Coffee Pitcher Packs, which allow customers to make their cold brew at home.

Fans of Starbucks (SBUX) cold brew coffee now have another option.

The coffee chain on Tuesday unveiled Starbucks Cold Brew Coffee Pitcher Packs, which allow customers to make their cold brew at home.

Starbucks first launched its cold brew coffee drinks in stores last year, later adding variations such as Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew and Nitro Cold Brew.

U.S. sales of cold brew coffee still make up a fraction of the industry's ready-to-drink coffee sales, according to Mintel research. However, the segment has been growing steadily since 2010 — up 339 percent through 2015, by Mintel's estimate — and has been exploding more recently as chains like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN) hopped on the trend.

Cold brewing is a method of brewing coffee over a long period of time without heat, which gives the beverage a less acidic taste.

Starbucks said its offering will be available for a limited time at U.S. Starbucks stores and select stores in Canada, and is designed to make the brew easy to prepare. Users just add the pitcher packs to water and slow-steep in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Each pitcher makes six 8-ounce servings and will stay fresh, if refrigerated, for up to seven days. Cartons include four pitcher packs, which together make 12 8-ounce servings.

The pitcher packs, made with Arabica Latin American and African ground coffee, use the same cold brew blend that is served in Starbucks cafes.
