Starbucks Is Officially Accepting Reusable Cups Again

Update, June 24, 2021: Earlier this week, Starbucks officially reintroduced its reusable cup policy after pausing it due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the chain is bringing back the reusable cup option, but the process is going to look a little bit different than before.

Reusable cups will only be accepted when you order your coffee in-store as the company continues to work on a safe way to offer them at the drive-thru. Customers can bring in clean cups to their local Starbucks and can place the clean travel mug into a ceramic mug while keeping their own lid. Baristas will then pour the drink into the reusable cup while only touching the ceramic mug and customers will be able to grab their cup and put the lid on themselves. This new arrangement is Starbucks' way to continue eliminating single-use plastic while also avoiding as much person-to-person contact on one cup as possible.

Original Post, June 8, 2021: As local COVID-19 regulations are changing and mask mandates are lifting across the country, chain restaurants are taking notice and updating their policies. For Starbucks, which recently changed its mask rules for vaccinated guests, this includes bringing back the use of reusable cups.

Last year the coffee chain suspended its use of reusable cups as a safety precaution during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, on June 22, reusable cups will once again be allowed in Starbucks shops but with a brand new contactless model.

Starbucks reusable cup model is a key part of the brand's commitment to reducing single-use cups when possible, they wrote in the announcement. The company is also bringing back the promotion that offers customers $.10 cents off their drink when it's served in a reusable cup.

The new process, which will launch in-store only for now, only accepts clean cups from customers. Customers will place their clean travel mug in a ceramic mug and keep their lid. Baristas will then pour the drink in the reusable cup—only touching the ceramic mug—before handing it off for customers to cap themselves. This model is meant to eliminate as much person-to-person touch contact on one reusable cup as possible.
