A St. Louis Dome Dominates This Week’s Most Popular Homes

A geodesic dome is a perfect match for a buyer looking to break away from the samey-same squares-ville that afflicts most of the nation’s housing stock.

So, it’s no surprise when we spy home lovers ogling the curves of a dome home—in fact, we’re shocked more domes don’t dominate our most popular homes on realtor.com®. But this week demonstrates how interesting life without straight lines can be.

This most popular dome home, smack-dab in the middle of the Midwest, was designed by a former student of Buckminster Fuller, Daddy Dome himself. The four-level arched living space offers more than 3,000 square feet of space on an acre of land in St. Louis. The listing agent said crowds have gathered to take a peek inside, and she expects that someone who wants to “live outside the box” will find the home perfectly proportioned.

Aside from the St. Louis structure, you clicked on a Pennsylvania home notable for its paintball area (and tax-evading owner), an updated vintage charmer in Utah, and a six-bedroom Jacksonville home that appeared to be selling for only $6 per square foot.

Appearances may deceive, but we’d never lie about the hottest homes in the country this week.

10. 324 Chan Rd, Falls Creek, PA

Price: $999,000

Why it’s here: Only 3 years old, this custom six-bedroom home sits on a 22-acre lot. We foresee many warm summer nights spent out back on the patio by the grill and pool.

9. 450 Brickyard Rd, Woodstock, CT

Price: $39,000,000

Why it’s here: It’s rough out there for royalty. Despite its eternal popularity, the Connecticut castle has yet to charm a buyer.

8. 215 Mystic Dr, Morgantown, WV

Price: $1,500,000

Why it’s here: Ranking third in the most expensive listings in Morgantown, this four-bedroom home boasts views of Cheat Lake. On 2 acres, the home is “located in a prestigious gated community.”

7. 301 N Carolwood Dr, Los Angeles, CA

Price: $150,000,000

Why it’s here: California’s most expensive home offers parking for 50 of your closest friends. Valet optional.

6. 3443 Glenn Hollow Ct, Jacksonville, FL

Price: $25,000

Why it’s here: The low, low price on this six-bedroom home was designed to attract attention, according to listing agent Ethan Gregory. At $6 per square foot, the value made us do a double take, but Gregory says the low price comes with a catch. (Of course it does!)

Gregory says the home was a bank-owned property that had been involved in a drug operation before the foreclosure. Bonus: It was deemed unsafe by local authorities, thanks to some “unpermitted work to the interior.” Gregory adds that the list price was the minimum bid in the home’s auction—which closed on Tuesday with a final sale price of $151,000.

5. 418 Scottfield Ter, Ballwin, MO

Price: $235,000

Why it’s here: The popularity of this traditional two-story home is a minor mystery. Its appeal is apparent, and the listing says the home offers “great curb appeal,” but besides that, we can’t quite pinpoint why this house rocketed up the chart this week.

4. 1996 Millville Shandon Rd, Ross Township, OH

Price: $384,900

Why it’s here: Listing agent Nick Hopewell attributes the four-bedroom home’s popularity to its curb appeal. Also, the 2.5-acre property offering two ponds stocked with bass and bluegill doesn’t exactly hurt.

3. 584 E 2650 N, North Ogden, UT

Price: $325,000

Why it’s here: It’s the perfect combo of vintage character and modern layout, according to listing agent Kevin Richter. Built in 1918, the home features an updated interior. Think new floors, fewer walls, and an open kitchen. Richter says the home received multiple offers and just went into contract for “well over the asking price.”

2. 339 Furnace Rd, Lewisburg, PA

Price: $1,800,000

Why it’s here: From what we can deduce, this home is owned by a local businessman named Brian Bolus, who pled guilty to tax evasion in January. Perhaps his infamy propelled clicks on his newly listed home, or maybe it’s the paintball area that comes with this 26-acre property.

1. 111 Marine Ln, Saint Louis, MO

Price: $398,000

Why it’s here: A dome home in the Gateway City. What else do you need? Agent Edye Todd told us the home was built in the late ’70s by Jon Mullinax, who studied with geodesic guru Buckminster Fuller. There’s another dome in the area designed by Mullinax, but Todd says this home is “the only one of its kind in St. Louis.” More than 100 curious locals came to a recent open house to check out its fascinating curves, she notes. And if a buyer is so inclined, the home’s garage could be converted back into a disco—which is how it spent its formative “Dance Fever”-ish years.
