St. John's family's wish for all-terrain wheelchair granted

A St. John's family is looking forward to spending more time together outdoors thanks to a special donation from the Children's Wish Foundation and Wedgwood Insurance.

Benjamin Mackey, 11, has cerebral palsy and needs a wheelchair to get around.

On Monday afternoon, he was presented with a brand new all-terrain chair that can be adapted to go almost anywhere—from the sand to the snow.

The Hippocampe retails for about $15,000 and, until now, the Mackey family borrowed a similar chair from the city for their outdoor excursions.

Lisa Mackey said having a chair of their own means her son won't have to sit on the sidelines while his siblings play on rough ground.

"So if you say snow, I'll say bring it on ... We can get out in whatever weather," she joked with CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon.
