South Africa's rand, bonds sink after police summon finance minister

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's rand tumbled to its weakest in a month and yields on bonds spiked on Wednesday after a special investigations unit ordered Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan to report to police in relation to a surveillance unit in the state tax service. * At 0645 GMT the rand was 0.1 percent weaker to 14.0100 perdollar from previous session low of 13.4385. * Unit plunged more than three percent after Treasuryconfirmed probe into minister, wiping out post election gains. * July consumer inflation due, expected to moderate furtherand boost case for SARB to hold rates next month. * Bonds track rand weaker, yield on benchmark 2026 issuerises 45.9 basis points to 8.935 percent.
