Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has officially cast Colleen O'Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails.
Directed by the returning Jeff Fowler, this animated/live-action hybrid welcomes back Ben Schwartz as the lightning-quick hero of the title, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski and Jim Carrey as Dr Eggman, while Idris Elba is debuting as fellow anthropomorphised mammal Knuckles.
O'Shaughnessey, whose voicework has graced movies, video games and anime, and who has been the voice of Tails in the franchise since 2014, announced her involvement via Twitter yesterday (December 7).
"Taking my old pal Tails for another adventure. Thrilled to announce I'm the voice of Miles "Tails" Prower in #SonicMovie2!" she wrote.
"Can't wait for y'all to see him on the big screen."
This casting news thrilled her friends and followers, as one responded: "Yeah!!! Awesome!!! Congratulations on being the voice of Tails in Sonic Movie 2, Colleen!!! You deserve it!!! Can't wait to hear you on the big screen next year!!!"
Another went on to share: "This is going to be one of your most unique starring roles ever, and it's for my favorite video game franchise. You rock!" before Schwartz himself got in on the action by retweeting his co-star's words with this addition: "THE LEGEND @VOColleen WILL BE VOICING TAILS IN #SonicMovie2!!! She is incredible in this movie! Can't wait for everyone to see! HOORRAYYY!!!!!!"
As for what she's letting herself in for, Digital Spy awarded the original 2020 movie three stars in our review.
"While the tone might be firmly aimed at children, Sonic the Hedgehog does have plenty of Easter eggs for the video game fans. At times, the fan service is a bit clunky, but mostly it doesn't get in the way of the plot and adds an extra level of fun to the adaptation," we decided.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is due out in cinemas next year.
