Ferrari and the artisans at Amalgam Collection have been working alongside one another to build some of the most accurate and beautiful scale models of the brand’s iconic cars since 1998. It should come as no surprise then that Amalgam was tasked with creating a one-off model of the equally rare Tailor Made 812 Competizione, with the automaker auctioning both off for charity at the Ferrari Gala Dinner and Auction last week. While the life-size V-12 machine brought in over $5 million, this scaled-down variant sold for $90,000.

The Tailor Made 812 Competizione is a unique tribute to the Ferrari design process, particularly the work of the automaker's chief design officer Flavio Manzoni. The bright yellow hue pays homage to the sketch paper that Ferrari designers use, while the bespoke Nero DS Sketch accents highlight specific elements within the bodywork. The design pad theme even continues to the interior, with the same color combination and detailing throughout. It’s a striking factory custom, even if it is quite a bit different from Ferrari’s typical special projects. The 812 Competizione is already limited to just 999 units, so it’s no shock that the hammer price for this piece of Ferrari history was deep into the seven figures.

The team at Amalgam Collection had no trouble replicating the very specific look of this car with this 1:8 scale model. Measuring in at 23-inches long, the 651-piece model was constructed by hand in the Amalgam workshop. The team was given actual CAD data from Ferrari to use in the replication project, ensuring the model was as accurate as possible. That’s made apparent from the moment you look inside, with perhaps the best model interior I’ve ever seen. Everything from the material selection to the smaller details on the dash are accurate representations of the original. Even the matte Giallo Tristrato paint is genuine and mixed to ensure the color looks accurate on the smaller panels. The same treatment was done for the Nero DS Sketch accents inside and out.

While details about the buyers haven’t been shared, it seems likely the new owner of the Tailor Made would be interested in such an item.

“The passion and artistry that Ferrari bring to creating the most exciting cars in the world, ignites an equal passion in the team at Amalgam to create models that deserve their place alongside the beautiful works of engineered art emerging from Maranello,” said Sandy Copeman, Director of Brand at Amalgam.

The Ferrari Foundation raised $7 million at the charity auction event, which will benefit the automaker’s charitable work with education.
