'SNL': Keegan-Michael Key defends surprise guest Kermit the Frog in violent Muppet sketch

"Saturday Night Live" host Keegan-Michael Key shared the stage this week with a surprise guest: Kermit the Frog.

During a Muppets-themed sketch, Key and cast member Kenan Thompson played members of Kermit's security team at one of the frog's shows. Per Muppet tradition, the performance was repeatedly interrupted by hecklers Statler and Waldorf.

But Key and Thompson's security guards clearly weren't aware of the classic schtick, responding angrily as Statler and Waldorf yelled insults from the box seats.

"Everybody paid good money to hear this little dragon and his friends do their thing," Key yelled. "So please let them do their thing without talking!"

As Statler and Waldorf continued to heckle, Key reminded them multiple times that they "are more than welcome to leave."

"Sorry for the interruption, Kramer," Key told Kermit. "Please continue."

Eventually, Key and Thompson took matters into their own hands, heading up to the box seats and punching and strangling the disrespectful puppets. At one point, they lifted Statler and Waldorf up in the air and were surprised to discover the hecklers were nothing but two torsos.

"Oh, snap! We didn't realize you guys didn't have no legs," Key said, before Thompson added, "We didn't know that y'all was veterans."

At the end of the sketch, Key and Thompson saw eye-to-eye with Statler and Waldorf, with Key taking a shot at heckling Kermit.

In addition to having Key host, this week's "Saturday Night Live" saw Olivia Rodrigo perform her songs "Drivers License" and "Good 4 U" as musical guest.
