'SNL': Kate McKinnon's Dr. Fauci, CDC's theater troupe struggle to explain new mask rules

Not sure when it's OK to take off your mask? You're not alone. Luckily, Kate McKinnon, as Dr. Anthony Fauci, is offering some insight on "Saturday Night Live."

This week's episode of the live sketch show kicked off with McKinnon's Fauci bringing on doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who minored in theater to demonstrate "correct mask behavior," now that the CDC has lifted many mask restrictions for people who've been vaccinated against COVID-19.

But the CDC players clearly aren't born actors, as their demonstrations of bar etiquette, flying on a plane and various social gatherings quickly went off the rails.

In one of the CDC skits, a young couple played by Andrew Dismukes and Chloe Fineman went on a date to an outdoor restaurant after starting their relationship during the pandemic.

"Oh, no! I don't like the bottom of your face," Fineman exclaimed, when Dismukes removed his mask to reveal some unflattering quarantine scruff. "It look like you grew mold under your mask."

"What if you put your mask over your eyes?" Dismukes suggested.

Fineman gave it a try. "Oh, that's nice! You look like a Blue Man," she quipped.

After many awkward skits, McKinnon's Fauci tried to salvage the explainer with a "big finale" titled "Society is Good Again: A Vision for the Future." The skit involved Beck Bennett, Aidy Bryant, Ego Nwodim and Bowen Yang playing a group of friends dancing at a party, when masks are no longer used because everyone's been vaccinated.

"I guess when we come together as a society, we can solve anything," a cheerful Bryant exclaimed.

Bennett seemed to agree, then suggested, "Now let’s talk about Israel."

This week's "SNL" was hosted by Keegan-Michael Key with musical guest Olivia Rodrigo, who performed her songs "Drivers License" and "Good 4 U."
