It’s keeping up with the Joneses Silicon Valley style.
Google (GOOG) is reportedly planning to propose new headquarters in Mountain View California.
Meantime, Apple’s (AAPL) new 2.8 million square foot spaceship campus in Curpertino is set to open next year.
While Facebook (FB) hired architect Frank Gehry to design its new digs in Menlo Park.
The New York Times reports that Google has tapped high-end London design firm Heatherwick Studio for its new office space and Danish architect Bjarke Ingels to craft the building.
The tech giant’s new bigger Googleplex will include pedestrian and bike paths, and “canopy like” structures according to the Times.
“It’s amazing that this company is only 15-years old. They have this tremendous campus that’s the envy of almost all of corporate America. And they feel as if for the longer term they need to have something bigger—maybe a more coherent type build-out space because they have now cobbled together buildings all over that area,” says Yahoo Finance Senior Columnist Michael Santoli.
Google is the biggest employer in the area with more than 20,000 employees. It currently takes up 7.3 million square feet of office space. And just to help you visualize just how big its campus really is....picture three Empire State buildings
Santoli point outs this speaks to a level of extreme over confidence among the leaders in the tech industry.
“When big companies start to put their names on stadiums or build a huge skyscraper somewhere, we say maybe they have Edifice complex and they basically wanting to show how important they are to the world. I am not going to say Google is in that category. But is kind of amazing that they have to undertake this tremendous project, when it seems as if almost every other company in the world would be very happy with what they have,” he adds.
Google is expected present the proposal of its new headquarters to the city council of Mountain View on Friday.
