Shareholders in Young's Brewery (LON:YNGA) are in the red if they invested three years ago

As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term Young & Co.'s Brewery, P.L.C. (LON:YNGA) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 23% in three years, versus a market decline of about 12%.

Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

Given that Young's Brewery didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over the last three years, Young's Brewery's revenue dropped 28% per year. That means its revenue trend is very weak compared to other loss making companies. With revenue in decline, the share price decline of 7% per year is hardly undeserved. The key question now is whether the company has the capacity to fund itself to profitability, without more cash. Of course, it is possible for businesses to bounce back from a revenue drop - but we'd want to see that before getting interested.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Young's Brewery will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Young's Brewery shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 1.6% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, that falls short of the 2% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. Before spending more time on Young's Brewery it might be wise to click here to see if insiders have been buying or selling shares.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of companies we expect will grow earnings.
