When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For instance, the price of RealPage, Inc. (NASDAQ:RP) stock is up an impressive 290% over the last five years.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the five years of share price growth, RealPage moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains.

It is of course excellent to see how RealPage has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on RealPage's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that RealPage shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 7.7% over the last year. However, that falls short of the 31% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute.
