Shaheen Bagh Dadi, Ridhima Pandey Among 4 Indians Named in BBC’s 100 Women List
The BBC has released its annual list of 100 women of the year, and four Indian women are among them. Child environmental activist Riddhima Pandey, para-badminton star Manasi Joshi (31), singer Isaivani, and 82-year-old Bilkis Bano, popularly known as Shaheen Bagh dadi, are the four Indians who made it to the list.
In September, Bilkis Bano was mentioned in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most influential People list of 2020. Bilkis is one of the ‘Shaheen Bagh dadis,’ the silent leaders of the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and anti-National Register of Citizens (NRC) movement that broke out in India last December.

Incidentally, Manasi Joshi was also recognised by TIME Magazine this year, when she was featured on the cover of the magazine as a ‘Next Generation Leader.’ It was after losing her left leg in a road accident in 2011 that the youngster started training in para-badminton. In 2019, she won gold in Switzerland at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championship, one of the biggest badminton tournaments.

Ridhima Pandey (12) has conceptualised several online and offline campaigns to make people aware of the environmental concerns. Ridhima was also among the 16 children, including Greta Thunberg, to file a complaint at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019, against government inaction on climate change.
Isaivani, the only woman in The Casteless Collective – a Tamil indie band based in Chennai, which is famous for their songs on political issues. According to the BBC, “Isaivani has successfully broken an age-old tradition, which has led other young female gaana singers to come forward and express themselves.”
