Severe weather threat in northwest Missouri ends after numerous tornado warnings

A severe weather threat in northwest Missouri, which prompted residents to take shelter amid tornado warnings, ended Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency issued a series of tornado warnings in the region north of Kansas City throughout the afternoon. It also said a confirmed tornado touched down in northern Caldwell County.

A tornado watch, meaning conditions are “favorable for the development of tornadoes,” remained in effect until 10 p.m. in eastern Missouri.

As the storm moved east earlier in the day, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in northwest Missouri said it responded to a report of people trapped in a home north of Wheeling. It said the residents were being checked on by emergency medical services.

The sheriff’s office shared photos of damage to trees, a structure and a large truck on its side.

“Always remember to watch for down power lines and broken gas or propane lines,” the agency wrote on Facebook. “Very dangerous.”
