Bernie Sanders' Vermont-made mittens worn at Biden inauguration go viral

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took the national stage Wednesday, officially beginning their tenure as president and vice president of the United States. Sen. Bernie Sanders, however, may have stolen the show with his Inauguration Day look – complete with Vermont-made mittens.

People watching the swearing-in ceremony spotted Sanders strolling into view with brown and white mittens detailed with a chevron pattern. The senator's outfit, coupled with his characteristically unbothered expression, instantly went viral online, according to the Burlington Free Press, which is part of the USA TODAY Network.

Even Sanders' colleague chimed in on Twitter.

"I want mittens like Amo @BernieSanders," wrote Rashida Tlaib, Democratic representative from Michigan.

It turns out the coveted mittens are made in Sanders' home state of Vermont, according to Ruby Cramer of Buzzfeed News.

"Bernie’s mittens are made by Jen Ellis, a teacher from Essex Junction, Vt," Cramer wrote on Twitter. "She gave them to him 2+ years ago and was surprised when he began wearing them on the campaign trail. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece made from recycled plastic bottles."

Twitter loved the mittens. One user called them "clutch."

Another wrote alongside a photo of Sanders, as if quoting his internal monologue: "I am once again asking for a space heater."
