Selena: The Series Part 2 to Premiere on Netflix in May

NETFLIX

Just over a month after first premiering on Netflix, Selena: The Series is preparing for a return.

The streaming service announced Friday that part 2 of the popular series, starring Christian Serratos as the Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla, will drop May 14.

The show follows the Mexican-American pop star's incredible rise to fame and tragic end. Quintanilla was shot and killed just days before her 24th birthday by Yolanda Saldívar, her friend and former fan club manager.

Part 2 will chronicle "the years of hard work and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigate together as she becomes the most successful female Latin artist of all time," according to a Friday release.

Ahead of the series' release last month, Serratos, 30, opened up to PEOPLE about what it meant for her to take on the role of the beloved singer.

"I've been listening to her since I was way below single digits," she said in November. "'Baila Esta Kumbia' (the second single released on Quintanilla's 1990 Ven Conmigo album), that was my song as a baby. Then it became my karaoke song as a teenager. I've always looked up to and really admired her, but I never thought I would have the opportunity to play her."

"It was really intimidating to audition and to play her, but I felt prepared in life to accomplish what I think we did on this show," continued Serratos. "I gave it everything I could."

Selena: The Series is the latest account of the legendary superstar's life and death in 1995 — Jennifer Lopez previously played her in the 1997 biopic film, Selena.

"This woman was a pioneer," Serratos said of Quintanilla. "She was way before her time. Transitioning into mainstream pop music was not easy for a Mexican woman in the '80s, but she did it gracefully and with such strength. It's something that I really look up to."

"I wanted to portray her spirit above anything," she added. "That's why I love her. I think that's why we all love her."
