The old Medieval charm of Marrakesh is apparently as current as ever, because the Moroccan city today was named the favorite city to visit in the world.

TripAdvisor released its annual Travelers’ Choice Awards, weighing millions of restaurant, hotel, and attraction reviews and ratings from its users over the past 12 months. Marrakesh earned the honour of top-rated destination in the world, with New York City claiming No. 1 in the U.S.

Marrakesh, featuring such favorite attractions as its nearly 1,000-year-old walled medina and Jardin Majorelle, moved up five spots from last year’s rankings. Runner-up Siem Reap, Cambodia, surged as well, rising seven spots.

“Winners change from year to year based on feedback from the community of millions,” TripAdvisor spokeswoman Julie Cassetina told Yahoo Travel of the two fast-risers. “These fantastic destinations offer a myriad of places to discover— from cultural sights, to renowned eateries, and highly rated hotels.”

Last year’s world No. 1, Istanbul, Turkey, fell two spots to No. 3. Here’s the rest of the world top 10, including a couple of the top-rated attractions, restaurants, or hotels that helped the cities get there:

Among U.S. cities, the top two remained intact from last year: New York, then Chicago. Which should be no surprise considering the vast number of top-rated attractions each city has – the Art Institute of Chicago, for example, was named the top-rated museum in the world by TripAdvisor last year.

The biggest riser in the U.S. was Charleston, S.C., which at No. 3 was 10 spots better than last year. Its Charleston Waterfront Park was a Travelers’ Choice winner in 2014, and the city’s restaurant scene is considered one of the nation’s best.
