Scotland residents furious over 'spooky' Halloween bank ad

Ghouls, ghosts and goblins are scary to children.

Not having access to your money or banking is scary to adults.

Which is why Scotland residents are furious at the Royal Bank of Scotland for wasting money on a cheesy video ad, meanwhile the publicly-backed bank has closed 23 branches in rural communities.

The ad, which was released for Halloween, is a 55 second clip exploring the myth that one of the bank's oldest branches in Fort William is haunted.

The campy horror style film recounts tales of doors flying open, eerie intercom rings and employees hearing whispers while alone in a room.

The video was not well received by the Scottish public.

"This is not voices from the past but a warning of the future," commented one angry customer, Debbie Moir. "Look out Fort William, they will be closing your branch down shortly just like they closed the one in Dufftown."

"The Stromness branch in Orkney just closed too – thanks very much – so you know where the ‘ghostly whispers’ are coming from," commented another displeased client.

The bank has been chastised for going back on its promise in 2010 to keep any branch open if it was "the last bank in town". With the 23 closings this year and 20 more closures projected for 2016, many Scots are wondering if their only option is to stuff their money in their mattress.

In total RBS has closed 385 branches in the UK, accounting for a third of all closures in the 2014-2015 fiscal year.
