TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - May 05, 2016) - Over 300 free events will take place across Canada for the most ambitious edition of Science Rendezvous to date on Saturday, May 7, 2016.

"This is not your grandpa's science fair," said Science Rendezvous Executive Director Kelsey Miller. "We are blowing up fruit, sending balloons to space, and breaking world records."

Saturday marks the ninth edition of Science Rendezvous, a national science festival described as Nuit Blanche for the sciences. In Miller's words: "This is a big impact, explosive, and exciting festival experience for all ages."

New to this year's festivities will be two World Record attempts in Toronto for largest DNA model ever built and longest non-Newtonian fluid dash. Science Rendezvous continues its tradition of partnering with research and community organizations to give the public one-of-kind experiences with Canadian research including: brewery tours, fire tornadoes, speed dating, dissections, stage shows, and live animals.

Events span from Vancouver to St. John's, including new sites in Whitehorse, Yukon and Inuvik, N.W.T., and take place in venues ranging from small community centres and university campuses to malls and sprawling public parks.

This is Science Rendezvous' second year conducting a Canada-Wide Experiment. Eight participating sites will release high-altitude balloons into space to take a snapshot of Canada's atmospheric health. The results will be analyzed by researchers at the University of Regina and presented at festival event sites.

Over 200,000 people attended Science Rendezvous events across Canada last year and even more are expected this year.

All events are free and open to the public, with most taking place between 10 am - 4pm on Saturday, May 7.

ONTARIO

Carleton University and Let's Talk Science (7:30pm - 9:45pm)
Light up the Night with Chemistry In the Dark. If it glows up, or blows up you will see it here: spontaneous combustion, fireworks, melting iron, and anything else that can't be done indoors. Before the show Let's Talk Science volunteers will be serving up liquid nitrogen ice cream with demonstrations on the chemistry of wine and chocolate.

University of Ottawa (10am - 3pm)
Activities will be presented in English and French. uOttawa professors, students and alumni will join forces to present exciting demonstrations, hands-on activities and explosive experiments.

Queen's University at Rogers K-ROCK Centre (10am - 3pm)
The Rogers K-Rock Centre becomes a giant Science Discovery Centre with something for everyone: The Math Midway, meet a great horned owl and a bald eagle, Chemistry Magic Show, robots and 3D printers. There will be special presentations throughout the day inside the Rogers K-Rock Centre and outside on The Tragically Hip Way. The first 1000 families will receive a booklet filled with experiments that can be done at home and passes to local museums.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology & Durham College (10am - 2pm)
Welcome to CSI Oshawa where you will solve a mystery by using a variety of forensic techniques. You can also experience nature through insects, animal skulls, owl pellets and biodiversity bingo. INVENTours include: diesel fuel from vegetable oil, flaming gummy bears, body building 101, inflatable pig's lung, dry ice rainbow, and Science Jeopardy.
