Sarah Thomas will be first woman to officiate a Super Bowl

Sarah Thomas continues to break barriers in the NFL. Thomas was named to the Super Bowl LV officiating crew Tuesday. Thomas will become the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl.

Thomas will be a down judge at the event.

The move continues Thomas’ rise through the league as an official. In 2015, Thomas became the first full-time female official in the NFL. In 2019, Thomas became the first woman to officiate a playoff game, overseeing a contest between the Los Angeles Chargers and the New England Patriots.

Super Bowl LV will take place Feb. 7. The winners of Sunday’s games between the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs will meet at the event.

Sarah Thomas will serve as Super Bowl LV down judge

As the down judge, Thomas will be tasked with watching for encroachment and offsides penalties before the snap. She will also be responsible for marking forward progress and working with the chain crew to ensure accurate measurements, among other tasks.

Thomas has plenty of experience in that area. She became a down judge in 2017, and served in the role during the 2020 NFL regular season.
