Safe Bulkers' (NYSE:SB) Dividend Will Be $0.05

The board of Safe Bulkers, Inc. (NYSE:SB) has announced that it will pay a dividend of $0.05 per share on the 7th of June. Including this payment, the dividend yield on the stock will be 5.7%, which is a modest boost for shareholders' returns.

Safe Bulkers' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Prior to this announcement, Safe Bulkers' dividend was only 12% of earnings, however it was paying out 335% of free cash flows. The business might be trying to strike a balance between returning cash to shareholders and reinvesting back into the business, but this high of a payout ratio could definitely force the dividend to be cut if the company runs into a bit of a tough spot.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 45.1%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 13% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $0.60 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of $0.20. This works out to a decline of approximately 67% over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the track record hasn't been stellar, we really want to see earnings per share growing over time. Safe Bulkers has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 69% per annum. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.

In Summary

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 2 warning signs for Safe Bulkers that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
