Sacramento State announces in-person graduation ceremony for 2022 at Golden 1 Center

After a virtual ceremony in 2020 and a drive-thru experience in 2021, Sacramento State plans to return to traditional, in-person commencement in 2022.

Spring graduation festivities will be held May 20-22 at Golden 1 Center, university President Robert Nelsen announced Monday in a message to students and faculty.

“Mask requirements and COVID-19 safety guidelines and protocols will be determined and communicated as we get closer to Commencement,” Nelsen said.

Fall 2021, spring 2022 and summer 2022 graduates are invited.

In the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, Sacramento State canceled the spring 2020 ceremony and announced plans to honor the classes of 2020 and 2021 with a combined ceremony at Golden 1 Center in May.

However, with the pandemic continuing well into 2021, the university instead held a two-day “CARmencement” ceremony, a vehicle procession in which campus officials said about 3,800 graduates participated, out of about 17,500 who completed degrees in 2020 and 2021.

The university does not plan to combine three graduating classes into one ceremony next year.

“I’m sorry, but at this time, we are unable to accommodate any requests for exceptions to the eligibility requirements (in 2022),” Nelsen said in Monday’s message, referring to 2020 and 2021 graduates. “Please check back with the Commencement Office in March or April 2022 for possible updates.”

Each student will be allotted six guest tickets in March, Nelsen wrote.
