The S650 Mustang Goes Retro to Celebrate 60 Years of Pony Car Dominance
It’s been sixty years since Ford first showed the Mustang to the public at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. In celebration of the pony car staple’s diamond jubilee, Ford has given the current S650 generation Mustang the retro treatment by way of a limited production 60th Anniversary package.
From the moment the world first laid eyes on the Mustang show car, Ford has had a winner on its hands. The enduring legacy of those early machines helped ensure that the Mustang is still kicking in 2024, while rivals like the Camaro and the Challenger have fallen by the wayside (again). While all three of the previous generation Mustangs have drawn styling inspiration from the first-generation model, this special edition package takes things a bit more literally.
The package itself is solely available on GT Premium models, but can be ordered in either coupe or convertible form. Customers will also be able to choose whether a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic backs up the 5.0-liter V-8 engine. From there, Ford lays the nostalgia on fairly thick, starting with a limited selection of paint colors. Wimbledon white, Race red, and Vapor blue are the only options for exterior hues, which come accented by silver mirror caps in the latter two specs. Inside, you’re left to choose between Space gray, Carmine red, or black Onyx themes. Every 60th Anniversary model will also come with some bespoke trim pieces, including modern clones of the original Mustang badges, a new grille mesh design that mirrors the 1964 show car, and a silver-accented intake in the nose.
Other design adjustments include a set of 20-inch wheels, which feature a dark gray finish with bright detail work, as well as a red aluminum center cap that harks back to the classic Mustang wheels. The package also comes with a set of bespoke headlights, which are smoked to make the grille details pop. Customers can choose between Iconic silver or Vermillion red rocker panel graphics.
Only 1965 examples of the Mustang 60th Anniversary package are slated for production, with serialized plaques adorning each model. Order books are expected to open later this summer, while Ford says customers can expect deliveries to begin taking place during the fourth quarter of the year. The automaker has yet to share any pricing details on the package at this time.
We’re sure that Ford will have no trouble moving that number of special edition models, especially with such an important anniversary afoot.
