Ryan Gosling's Wolfman reboot will reunite him with The Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance.

The original plan was for Leigh Whannell to direct this movie, after impressing with his modern take on The Invisible Man, but scheduling issues have forced him to drop out.

Deadline now reports that Cianfrance is in negotiations to replace Whannell, which would mark his third time collaborating with Gosling.

"Horror movies were my first love — my entry into what cinema was capable of narratively, psychologically and aesthetically. Coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with Ryan again, this is truly a dream come true," Cianfrance said.

"I'm thrilled and inspired to work with the good folks at Blumhouse and Universal to bring this monster back to life in our collective unconscious."

Oscar-nominated for his written work on Sound of Metal this year, Cianfrance is also down to pen the screenplay, based on a new concept by Gosling.

Barely anything is known about this incarnation of the hairy moon-howler, but it's been previously teased that Gosling's character is a shapeshifting news anchorman.

First arriving on the scene with 2010's Blue Valentine, which also starred Gosling, Cianfrance's last release was the HBO miniseries I Know This Much is True, starring Mark Ruffalo in a dual role.

The iconic werewolf character first appeared in a series of movies in the 1940s. Joe Johnston directed a 2010 reboot starring Benicio del Toro in the title role, with a cast including Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving.

That reboot underperformed at the box office, failing to make back its budget, and opened to largely negative reviews – although it did win an Oscar for Best Make-Up.
