Roofing company facing OHS charges after fatal 2014 workplace incident

A company has been charged in connection with a workplace incident in Bay Roberts that left two people dead and three more injured.

In October, 2014, employees of Dunrite Roofing were repairing the roof of the Bay Roberts town hall, also known as the cable building.

According to police, workers were moving an aluminum ladder when they came into contact with electricity.

Now, Dunrite Roofing, which is located in Spaniard's Bay, has been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The three counts allege that Dunrite failed to provide a safe workplace, that it failed to maintain a safe distance from conductors of electricity, and that it failed to obtain assurances from the owner of the power system when a safe distance could not be maintained.

The court case is scheduled to begin Aug. 31 at provincial court in Harbour Grace.
