A-Rod Picks Up Unbuilt Penthouse in Miami

BUYER: Alex Rodriguez
LOCATION: Miami, FL
PRICE: more than $4,000,000
SIZE: 3,213 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTE: According to a widely circulated press release, New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez has scooped up a 53rd floor penthouse at the GranParaiso, an under construction residential tower in Miami’s burgeoning Edgewater neighborhood. The exact purchase price wasn’t revealed but according to the press release similar penthouse level units “go for over $4MM.” A little online research suggests the slugger’s unit measures in at 3,213-square-feet and when finished will benefit from a private elevator landing, head-roomy 12-foot ceilings, and full walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open to a 951-square-foot terrace that wraps around three sides of the apartment. Interior spaces are planned with four en suite bedrooms — each with at least one walk-in closet, a total of 4.5 bathrooms, and a combination living, dining and kitchen space that spans nearly 1,000-square-feet with sweeping views to the north and over Biscayne Bay.

The tall and glassy GranParaiso, which will have a luxuriously austere lobby conceived by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni, is not scheduled to be completed until 2018 and will be the fourth and final tower in the sprawling, resort-style Paraiso complex. Residents of the swank, 10-ish acre development have access to a bevy of recreational amenities and leisure activities that include a spectacular 100-foot diameter zero entry swimming pool, a separate children’s pool, numerous tennis courts, a private gym with spa facilities, putting green, outdoor yoga and Pilates room, bowling lanes, a virtual golf module, wine-tasting room and cigar lounge, state-of-the-art screening room, and access to complex’s beach club. Other name-brand owners in the complex, per the press release, include DJ/producer David Guetta, Spanish tennis champ Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, and professional basketball player Manu Ginóbili.

Mister Rodriguez, a 14-time Major League Baseball All-Star and admitted performance enhancing drug user who is paid more than $20 million per year by the Yankees and by some estimates has a net worth in excess of a quarter of a billion dollars, is a staple of the celebrity property gossip columns due to his frequent buying and selling of multi-million dollar residence. Our research indicates his current holdings include but certainly may not be limited to a 3,700-square-foot contemporary above L.A.’s Sunset Strip that was acquired in August 2014 for $4.8 million from Her Hollywood Highness Meryl Streep. The property mad infielder also appears to be in the process of building an approximately 12,000-square-foot über-contemporary compound on a 1.47-acre landlocked parcel in Coral Gables, FL, that he snatched up in July 2013 for $2.69 million. In May of 2013 he sold an all but brand spanking new and also super-modern 21,179-square-foot, custom-built mansion on Miami Beach’s North Bay Road for $30,000,000; He briefly owned a three-bedroom condo on the 11th-floor at MEi complex at the northern end of Miami Beach that he acquired in June 2013 for $2.1 million and sold in September 2014 for $2.575 million; And the year before, in April 2012, he sold for $6.6 million a 35th-floor combination condo at The Rushmore complex on the Upper West Side of Manhattan that he’d only purchased a year earlier for $5.5 million.
