Robert De Niro is Opening a Hotel in London

The Academy Award-winning actor is braving the hospitality waters again with the announcement that he is opening The Wellington, a new luxury hotel in London’s posh Covent Garden area.

The 83-room property will merge six historic buildings on Wellington Street into one large unit, The Telegraph reported. The hotel will include a luxury spa, two restaurants, a café, and a central courtyard perfect for sipping a cuppa while leafing through The Guardian and pretending not to look for celebrity guests.

"London is one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in the world,” said De Niro in a statement. "It makes perfect sense to develop a hotel that represents all of that in the heart of this city in Covent Garden." He added: "The Wellington Hotel would honour the heritage of the area, while bringing the best of what we've done in New York to London." For the project, De Niro is once again working with the team that developed the Greenwich Hotel in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood. That hotel is a favorite spot for stars visiting the city for premieres at De Niro’s other venture, the Tribeca Film Festival.

If plans to merge the historic buildings are approved by the Westminster City Council, work is scheduled to begin in 2017. If all goes according to plan, the Wellington will be welcoming guests sometime in 2019.

Hopefully the actor and his hospitality team have learned from their mistakes at The Nobu Hotel. The property in Manila, Philippines was named the worst new luxury hotel in 2015 by Luxury Travel Intelligence, a members-only high-end travel-rating company.
