In addition to launching the R2 SUV and the R3 crossover, Rivian has announced its first performance car. That would be R3X, a rally-inspired variant of the R3 that looks ready for the world's gravel roads.
Like the basic R3, the R3X is based on a shortened version of the platform used in the new mid-sized R2 SUV. The R3X goes one step further, adding rally-like styling elements inside and out. That presumably includes some kind of suspension upgrade or tuning that has not been announced yet, but Rivian CEO RJ Scringe says that the resulting car "[delivers] a level of on and off road performance that will get us all very excited."
Details on what actually makes the R3X more performance-focused are sparse, but Rivian openly calls it the performance version of the R3 and notes its rally inspiration. The basic R3 is expected to be available in single-motor, dual-motor, and three-motor layouts, with the quickest three-motor models capable of reaching 60 MPH from a standstill in under 3 seconds. The R3X should get at least the faster option, making it plenty powerful for a hot crossover with off-road aspirations.
Reservations for the R2 have begun ahead of early 2026 deliveries. Deliveries for R3s, and R3X models with them, are set to begin after the R2 is on the road. Given how long that timeline is, Rivian may not share full details on what makes the stylish R3X special for a year or two.
