RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust (TSE:REI.UN) sheds 5.9% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth

As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. We regret to report that long term RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust (TSE:REI.UN) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 11% in three years, versus a market return of about 42%.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust's TSR for the last 3 years was 7.0%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. It's nice to see that RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 15% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 4% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently.
